St. Louis has some of the best historic brick houses, but this stone Victorian is on another level
I spend way too much time looking at houses in the Central West End, but this 1893 stone Victorian stopped me cold. It looks like a literal castle dropped right onto a private street.
First impressions
When you walk up to the property, the vintage street lamp and stone walkway set a pretty incredible scene.
The front of the house is entirely rough-cut stone, complete with a curved turret that runs up the left side.
The stonework is full of neat details, like this deeply recessed oval window framed by massive blocks.
Even the archway over the front door has intricate carvings that you only notice when you get close.
The concrete steps lead up to a wood door that has been featured in local design books.
The paneled entry
Once you walk through the door, you end up in a vestibule wrapped in wood paneling.
The main foyer has its own fireplace, which is a wild feature to have right inside the front door.
Looking further in, you can see how the wood archways frame the staircase and lead into the rest of the house.
From the foyer, a wide doorway opens up directly into the main parlor.
Light-filled parlors
The front room takes advantage of that curved turret with three massive windows that let in tons of light.
On the other side of the room, there is a marble fireplace that anchors the space.
The carving on this fireplace mantle is remarkably detailed and looks original to the house.
Adjacent to the parlor is a second sitting area, currently used as a home office, with its own glass doors leading outside.
The stained glass transoms above those doors are incredibly detailed and cast beautiful light into the room.
The dining room
The dining room is massive, with wood wainscoting and another working fireplace.
This fireplace features spiral columns and sits right across from a set of built-in cabinets.

The glass chandelier features delicate leaf details that look like art when the light hits them.

The main bedroom is huge, with curved windows that mirror the turret shape from the front exterior.
The ensuite bathroom has a freestanding soaking tub and black tile floors.
They ran a slab of marble behind the double vanity, which serves as a backdrop for the mirrors.
There is also a glass walk-in shower with gold hardware that matches the tub filler.
The dressing room is lined with custom dark wood wardrobes and has plenty of space for a seating bench.
Incredibly, the dressing room has its own working fireplace with a carved wood mantle.
The mantle in the closet has a built-in mirror and dark marble tiling around the hearth.

The other bathrooms in the house are just as nicely finished, featuring clean marble tile and gold details.
This guest bedroom is incredibly spacious and features another curved window area.
