This 1838 Virginia house has some of the coolest trim colors I’ve ever seen

I need to show you this place in Red House, Virginia. It was built in 1838, costs $325,000, and is basically a giant time capsule with three full floors of incredible original woodwork.

Out front

From the road, it looks like an old estate with columns and black shutters.

Once you get up close on the porch, you realize the scale of this place is just massive.

The double doors

Look at these front doors. The blue paint on the paneling is original-style and absolutely makes the entryway.

You walk through and you are in a wide hallway with heart pine floors that look practically untouched.

The main hall

The woodwork on the side of the stairs is incredible. They went all out with the scroll detailing.

Looking straight down the hall, it has that traditional layout where the air can just drift through.

You even get a hanging lantern that looks like it has been there forever.

The parlor

To one side is the living room. They used the same blue on the fireplace mantle and the wainscoting.

It is a huge room, but the fireplace keeps it feeling grounded.

And check out those louvered doors on the back wall. Perfect for hiding modern stuff.

The library

The next room is what I would use as a library. It has built-ins that are completely packed.

There is actually a side stairs tucked away in the corner here. Old houses always have these quirky layouts.

Imagine sitting by this fireplace on a cold night with a book.

Where everyone eats

The dining room has enough space for a large table and a hutch.

The light coming through those deep windows must be great in the afternoon.

The kitchen setup

The kitchen has a casual feel with a tiled floor and room for a breakfast table.

It is simple, functional, and does not try to look like a modern nightmare.

And they kept the storage going all the way around the nook.

Utility spaces

Right off the kitchen is the laundry area. It is tight, but they made room for an antique cabinet.

There is also a back den with a door straight to the yard.

The bathroom is pretty straightforward with a shower.

The landing

Heading up the main stairs, you get this high landing.

The green paint up here is fantastic against the walls.

There is even a nook on the landing overlooking the front yard.

The bedrooms

One of the bedrooms has this green trim and steps up to a door.

Here is a better look at that door setup. It is so quirky.

Each bedroom has its own fireplace, which is wild.

The detail on the fireplace mantels up here is different from downstairs.

The other bedroom is huge and done in wallpaper with another fireplace.

Attic hideaway

You take these steep stairs up to the attic.

It is fully finished into these bedrooms with sloped ceilings.

They set up a sitting area right at the top of the stairs.

And there is plenty of room for a bed and a couple of armchairs under the rafters.

This would be the absolute best spot for guests.

The backyard

The back of the house shows how it evolved with different additions.

There is a small outbuilding in the yard that looks original to the property.

You get nearly two acres of green grass surrounded by trees.

And for anyone who likes to tinker, there is a workshop out back.

It is seriously huge inside, with high ceilings and tons of shelving.

The big picture

When you look at it from above, you can see how private the lot actually is.

It is surrounded by farmland, yet only twenty minutes away from Appomattox.
