I cannot stop looking at this Detroit mansion with a literal ballroom in the basement

Let’s be honest, most multi-million dollar homes look like high-end hotels. This one in Palmer Woods actually has some serious history behind it, and the woodwork alone is enough to make you look twice.

First impressions

You pull up to these huge brick pillars with iron gates that look like they belong on a university campus.

The front of the house is this sprawling manor that is just incredibly imposing. It feels like you are visiting an incredibly wealthy aunt who collects European antiques.

The grand entrance

When you walk through the front door, you are hit with wood panels from floor to ceiling. This fireplace looks like it was carved by medieval monks, and they just went ahead and threw a zebra rug on the floor.

The staircase wraps around the hall with some of the most intricate woodwork you will ever see. It is heavy, dark, and wonderfully dramatic.

Living rooms for days

If you want something a bit lighter, the main living room opens up with white walls and a plaster ceiling. It has massive windows that let in actual sunlight to cut through all that dark oak.

Then you find this sunroom that is just a wild choice. Yellow walls, velvet couches, and a literal stone fountain built right into the wall.

Where business gets done

This library is where you go to pretend you read leather-bound books. The painted ceiling beams are spectacular, and those leather chairs look like they have seen a lot of late-night brandy.

Even the smaller dining spaces have personality, like this circular table sitting next to painted wallpaper and stained glass windows.

The formal dining room, though, is on another level. Marble floors, a table that seats twelve easily, and classic plaster moldings.

A surprisingly modern kitchen

After all that historic drama, the kitchen is a complete shock. It is a minimalist space with flat-panel cabinets and slate floors.

It features a massive island that doubles as a breakfast bar, which is probably where you would actually spend most of your mornings.

More cozy corners

This sitting room has vaulted ceilings with these painted medallions that are incredibly unique. It is a bit more relaxed than the formal salons.

If you want to feel like you are outside without dealing with bugs, this screened porch has brick walls and slate floors.

Even the hallways are dramatic, like this stone corridor with Gothic arches.

Sleeping quarters

The bedrooms are massive, with huge windows that look out over the grounds. They kept the walls white here, which keeps the rooms from feeling too gloomy.

The crazy amenities

Now we get to the stuff that makes this place ridiculous. There is an conservatory filled with palm trees that leads straight to the pool.

The pool room looks like something from a luxury health club, complete with massive windows looking out at the gardens.

They also managed to fit a full-scale gym in here with enough equipment to open a commercial fitness center.

Up in the attic, there is a private cinema room with a neon sign that pays homage to Detroit’s famous Fisher Theatre.

It has leather recliners and a massive projection screen for movie nights with friends.

The basement surprises

Just when you think you have seen it all, you head downstairs and find a full ballroom. The marble floors and gold-painted trim make it look like a historic hotel lobby.
