I found an actual Cold War missile silo for sale in Kansas and the layout is wild
Zillow surfing usually gets you boring suburban homes, but every once in a while, you stumble onto something that looks like a villain headquarters. This place is a decommissioned Atlas E nuclear missile base sitting on 23 acres of Kansas flatland.
The middle of nowhere
You drive down a private road to get here, and honestly, nobody is finding you unless you want them to.
The perimeter is fenced off, and you get plenty of open grass to do whatever you want with.
Oh, and there is a literal runway if you happen to fly a small plane or just want a really long drag strip.
The house inside a hangar
Since living underground in a concrete bunker can get a bit gloomy, the current setup has a hangar built right on top.
Once you walk through the door, it actually looks like a normal, modern apartment.
They used carpet tiles with a checkered pattern and put in a TV on the wall to make it feel cozy.
The kitchen is simple and clean with white cabinets and a breakfast bar.
It has normal appliances, so you do not have to live like you are eating military rations.
The bathroom is surprisingly nice, complete with tile in the shower.
They even put in an accent wall behind the toilet to give the space some texture.
Upstairs is a bedroom with plenty of room for a queen-sized bed.
Right next to the bed, there is a yellow ladder that goes up to a hatch.
Going underground
Now for the real reason anyone looks at this place: the actual missile silo bunker. You head down a concrete ramp to get to the entrance.
You walk through the heavy doors and end up in a series of metal tunnels.
It feels like walking through a submarine or some secret military base.
The bunker itself
Once you get past the tunnels, the scale of this underground structure hits you. The main room has columns holding up the ceiling.
It is over 15,000 square feet of space underground, and some areas still have water on the floor.
Look up and you can see where the doors are located.
The current owner started framing out actual rooms inside the dry parts of the bunker.
You could build a mansion underground down here if you have the budget for it.
There is even a ladder system if you need to climb up to the upper structural levels.
The roof situation
Back up top, you can see the concrete slab that seals the launch area from the elements.
It is basically a fortress hidden right beneath the Kansas prairie.
