I can’t decide if this Connecticut spaceship house is incredibly cool or completely wild

You have probably seen some strange architectural experiments, but this copper condo in Guilford is something else entirely. Locals call it “The Spaceship,” and once you see how it hovers over the hill, you will understand why.

First impressions from the driveway

The architect, Wilfred Armster, went all-in on this design back in the eighties. The whole structure is clad in copper that has aged into a deep brown and green patina over the decades.

It sits right on top of a grassy ridge, looking out toward the water. It is definitely not your average beach-town condo.

When you pull up, you drive right underneath the main living quarters. The entrance is tucked away down here among the structural supports.

There are actually individual garages built into the foundation level. You get a massive two-car garage with plenty of extra room for gear.

The concrete columns holding the whole thing up are massive. It feels a bit like walking under a highway overpass, but in a cool, industrial way.

The way the curved underside wraps around the hill is pretty wild to see up close. It is clear the architect wanted to leave the landscape as untouched as possible.

Heading up the stairs

Once you enter through the garage, you are greeted by a straight run of wood stairs. It is narrow, but the wood tones keep it from feeling too cold.

The main living space

At the top of the stairs, the place opens up into a massive great room. The long strip of wood-framed windows along the front wall lets in so much light.

There is a fireplace on one side of the room, built right into a raised wood platform. It is a cozy spot to sit when the weather gets cold.

The windows look straight out toward the trees and the water in the distance. The wood paneling underneath the glass acts like a long built-in bench.

The ceiling height changes throughout the room, which makes the layout feel distinct even though it is open. A high slot window runs above the main glass band.

There is a perfect little corner here for a home office desk. Working with a view like that would make the day go by a lot faster.

The wood floors run through the entire level, keeping the flow simple. You can see how the living, dining, and working areas all hang out together.

From the desk corner, you get a good look back at how the kitchen and dining space connect. The open layout makes the 1,600 square feet feel much larger.

A step leads up from the living room to the dining and kitchen level. The transition is marked by a warm ocher accent wall.

Let’s talk about the kitchen

The dining area sits right next to the kitchen bar. The current owners went with blue velvet chairs that match the living room sofa nicely.

The kitchen has a massive breakfast bar wrapped in a simple wood finish. The white quartz countertops keep things looking clean and bright.

You get a view of the trees through the high windows while standing at the double sink. The appliances are all stainless steel and look practically new.

There is plenty of drawer space built into the peninsula. It is a really functional setup for cooking while still being part of the conversation.

That secret second living room

Tucked away on the main floor is this versatile den space. They have a bright pink sofa in here, and the window sill acts as a great mid-century style console.

It is a great spot to hide away with a book if someone else is watching television in the main room. The half-wall keeps it feeling connected but still private.

Just off the den is a full bathroom with a simple white vanity. It is convenient for guests so they do not have to head upstairs.

They also managed to fit a stacked washer and dryer setup in here. It is a clever use of space that keeps the laundry out of sight.

The primary suite upstairs

Up on the second level, the bedroom features some incredible exposed wood ceiling beams. The natural wood tones paired with the soft blue walls make it feel incredibly peaceful.

The bedroom opens up directly to a private sun deck. You can slide the glass doors open to catch the breeze off the Sound.

On the other side of the room, there is an angled window that follows the slope of the roof line. It is a really unique architectural detail.

There is also a cozy little reading corner up here. The wood paneling continues along the base of the walls, tying the whole house design together.

The sun deck is cut right into the copper shell of the building. It offers a very private spot to sit outside without being seen by the neighbors.

You can fit a couple of comfortable chairs out here. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee and look out over the trees.

The view from the deck overlooks the nearby marina and marshland. You get a front-row seat to some incredible coastal scenery.

The bathroom situation

The primary bathroom is quite spacious, featuring a double vanity with plenty of storage underneath. The wood trim mirrors the style of the rest of the home.

There is a deep jetted tub sitting directly under another large, angled window. Taking a bath under the stars here must be incredible.

In addition to the tub, there is a separate standing shower. It is a nice luxury to have both options in a one-bedroom condo.

The layout is well thought out, with a door separating the main vanity area from the rest of the bedroom suite.

How the space lays out

The main floor plan shows how the living area wraps around the central staircase. It makes great use of the circular shape of the building.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom takes up almost the entire floor, complete with a walk-in closet and that massive bathroom. It is a really cool place if you appreciate unique architecture.
