I can’t stop looking at this 1890 waterfront house in Connecticut

Look, I know four million bucks is serious money, but this old Victorian in Essex has been owned by the same family for nearly fifty years, and it is a complete trip. It sits right on Middle Cove, which is this quiet little offshoot of the Connecticut River, so you get all the water views without dealing with crazy boat traffic.

The front porch

When you pull up to the front, you get this massive facade that looks like it belongs on a historic postcard. It has giant trees framing the yard and this white-clapboard look that feels so New England.

The front entrance has this bright yellow door that just pops against the columns. It is incredibly friendly right off the bat, and the stone pavers on the porch are a great touch.

Even the side entrance has its own little shingled awning and a plaque marking it as the Frederick Scholes House from 1890. It feels like a real piece of history.

The main hallway

Once you walk through that front door, you are in this wide foyer with peach walls and elegant trim. It immediately feels cozy rather than stuffy.

And check this out. There is a literal fireplace right in the middle of the hallway. It has a carved mantel and stands right next to a grand staircase.

The living spaces

The main living room is huge but feels incredibly comfortable. It opens up into multiple seating areas, starting with a view towards the back library.

The fireplace in here has this ornate mirror sitting on the mantel. The detail on that woodwork is wild.

Here is a wider shot of the room. You can see how much space there is for seating, and those tall windows let in tons of natural light.

There is another cozy corner of the room that is perfect for just sitting and reading, framed by antique art on the walls.

And then you have the library area. Those built-in bookshelves are a total dream for anyone with a big book collection.

Just off the main living areas, there is a dedicated study. It has plenty of room for a large desk and a comfortable sofa for when you need a break from work.

The dining area and kitchen

The dining room feels very formal but connects directly to the sunroom. You can open up the French doors to keep the whole space feeling connected.

Looking back the other way, you get a sense of how the house flows. The wood paneling on the walls adds so much character.

The kitchen has been updated with white cabinets and modern appliances, but it still keeps its historic warmth with dark floors.

But the absolute best part of the kitchen is the view from the sink. Imagine doing the dishes while looking out at the calm water of the cove.

The sunroom

This is where you would spend all your time. The sunroom has these beautiful wood ceilings and walls of windows looking right at the water.

It has a long layout that easily fits a huge couch and multiple armchairs. It feels incredibly peaceful.

At the far end, there is a small dining setup. Having breakfast right next to those sliding glass doors would be the perfect morning routine.

Heading upstairs

Now we have to talk about this staircase. The green steps paired with that yellow wallpaper is such a bold, fun choice. You can not miss it.

The main bedroom is huge and feels like a classic bed and breakfast. It has built-in dressers and massive windows looking out to the water.

There is also plenty of room for an armchair corner and a large wardrobe. It is a really generous layout.

One of the bathrooms has been updated with marble tile and modern fixtures, but they kept a gold mirror to honor the home’s age.

But this pink bathroom is the real showstopper. It has a pink tub, pink trim, and vintage pink wallpaper. It is incredibly fun that they kept this original character intact.

There is another staged bedroom on the second floor that shows just how easily these rooms can handle modern furniture while keeping their classic charm.

Interestingly, the second floor also has its own kitchenette setup. It is perfect if you have guests staying over and want to give them some autonomy.

The third floor loft

If you head up to the very top floor, you find this awesome loft space. The exposed beam adds so much rustic charm to the landing.

The third floor has its own living area under the sloped ceilings. It feels like a secret apartment hidden away at the top of the house.

There is also a bedroom up here. The sloped ceilings make it feel incredibly cozy and tucked away.

And yes, there is even a third kitchen up here. It has plenty of cabinet space and a small dining spot.

The kitchen sink up here has its own view of the cove through the trees. It is a great spot to look out.

The backyard and waterfront

Out back, you have a three-car garage and a manicured lawn. There is plenty of room for parking and storage.

The driveway sweeps down towards the water, giving you this incredible perspective of the cove right from your backyard.

This aerial view shows exactly how the property sits on the shoreline. You get a massive chunk of private waterfront land.

At sunset, the view from the back deck looking across the cove is absolutely unbeatable.

As the sun goes down, the light filters through the trees and casts these long shadows across the grass. It is the kind of place where you could just sit and watch the water for hours.
