A 39-acre historic NY estate with a massive Gilded Age ballroom

This is Rushmore Estate in Highland Mills, New York, originally built in 1908 by attorney Charles E. Rushmore—yes, the guy Mount Rushmore is named after.

You get nearly 40 private acres to play with here, complete with rolling lawns and hiking trails.

Standing under the grand entry porch, you get a great view of the circular driveway and the vast front lawn.

Historic details everywhere

If you look closely at the columns and railings on the exterior, you can see the incredible craftsmanship from over a century ago.

There’s even a carved stone balustrade that literally tells you who built the place back in MCMVIII.

Connecting the different wings of the house are these beautiful covered loggias that overlook the courtyard.

Walking down these corridors feels like wandering through a historic monastery in Europe.

Step inside the main house

Once inside, the woodwork takes center stage with a grand staircase that features incredibly detailed hand-carved panels.

The hallway ceiling is a work of art all on its own, with a plaster barrel-vault design that adds serious drama.

The legendary ballroom and dining spaces

Passing through this arched wood doorway brings you into what might be the coolest room in the entire Hudson Valley.

This Gilded Age ballroom is absolutely massive, featuring a huge fireplace, arched windows, and balconies overlooking the dance floor.

Right off the ballroom is the dining hall, which has rich wood paneling, built-in bookcases, and another decorative plaster ceiling.

And when you want some fresh air, French doors open right up to a sprawling stone patio.

A kitchen built for crowd-pleasing feasts

The kitchen was renovated in 2005 but kept its historic charm, starting with a massive marble-topped island with a hand-carved wood base.

There’s a massive Viking range nestled under a white subway tile archway, complete with a pot filler.

They even managed to blend a massive built-in walk-in refrigerator behind a vintage-style wood door.

The bedrooms and baths

With 16 bedrooms across the property, there’s no shortage of space, and many of them have their own fireplaces.

This bedroom features rich wood floors, a cozy fireplace, and access to a balcony.

The bathrooms have been updated with classic black and white tile patterns to keep that vintage aesthetic alive.

Up on the top level, there’s even a finished attic space currently set up with a vintage pinball machine.

The guest house situation

As if the main house wasn’t enough, there’s a separate guest house that features a Tiffany clocktower made of glazed ceramic.

Inside the guest house, you’ll find cozy living spaces that are perfect for extended family or friends.

Outside, you get a 60-foot infinity pool that looks straight out over your own private lake.
